Puppy Vaccination Schedule & Pet Licensing Requirements in the UAE

Puppy Vaccination Schedule & Pet Licensing Requirements in the UAE

Bringing home a new puppy in the UAE involves more than choosing the right breed and puppy-proofing your home. Local authorities in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and across the Emirates require pet owners to follow specific vaccination protocols and complete official registration steps. Skipping these steps can lead to fines, travel restrictions, or complications if your puppy ever gets lost. Here's exactly what every new Puppyfy UAE owner needs to know.

Why Vaccination Timing Matters in the UAE Climate

The UAE's warm climate and high density of outdoor cafes, parks, and pet-friendly communities mean puppies are exposed to other animals early and often. Diseases like parvovirus and rabies spread quickly in group settings such as dog parks or grooming salons. Following the correct vaccine schedule protects not just your puppy, but every other dog they interact with.

Standard Puppy Vaccination Schedule

  • 6-8 weeks: First combination vaccine (DHPP - distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza)
  • 10-12 weeks: Second DHPP booster
  • 14-16 weeks: Third DHPP booster plus Rabies vaccine (mandatory by UAE law)
  • 6 months: Deworming follow-up and optional Bordetella/Kennel Cough vaccine if your puppy will be groomed or boarded
  • Annually: Rabies booster (required for licensing renewal) and DHPP booster

Your veterinarian may adjust this schedule based on breed, health history, or whether your puppy was imported, so always bring any prior vaccination records to your first UAE vet visit.

Microchipping: A Legal Requirement

All dogs in the UAE must be microchipped with an ISO-compliant chip before they can be registered or receive a rabies vaccine certificate recognized by municipal authorities. Microchipping is usually done during the same visit as the rabies vaccine, typically around 12-16 weeks of age, and is a permanent, painless procedure.

Pet Registration by Emirate

Registration rules differ slightly depending on where you live:

  • Dubai: Pets must be registered with Dubai Municipality. You'll need the microchip number, rabies vaccination certificate, and a passport-style photo of your puppy.
  • Abu Dhabi: Pet licensing is managed through the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) via the TAMM platform. A license must be renewed annually along with the rabies booster.
  • Sharjah and Northern Emirates: Requirements are less centralized, but a rabies certificate and microchip are still strongly recommended, especially if you plan to travel between Emirates or board your dog.

Documents to Keep on Hand

  • Original vaccination record from your breeder or previous vet (especially important for imported puppies)
  • Microchip registration certificate
  • Valid rabies vaccination certificate, renewed annually
  • Municipality or TAMM pet license/registration number
