Feeding Your Puppy Right: A UAE Owner's Nutrition Guide by Breed Size

Feeding Your Puppy Right: A UAE Owner's Nutrition Guide by Breed Size

Bringing home a new puppy in the UAE comes with a unique feeding challenge: most premium puppy foods are imported, shelf life can be affected by heat during transport and storage, and the sheer variety of breed sizes sold across Dubai and Abu Dhabi means there's no single "right" diet for every pup. This guide breaks down exactly what, how much, and when to feed your puppy so it grows into a healthy, well-conditioned adult dog.

Why Puppy Nutrition in the UAE Is Different

Unlike in cooler climates, food stored in warehouses, pet shops, or even your car can degrade faster here due to heat exposure. Kibble bags left in humid conditions can go rancid or develop mold before the expiry date. Always check for a cool, dry storage stamp from the retailer, and avoid buying large bulk bags unless you can store them in an airtight container away from sunlight.

Feeding by Breed Size

Breed size determines growth rate, calorie needs, and joint development risk — feeding a large-breed puppy like a Golden Retriever the same way as a toy breed can cause serious long-term issues.

  • Toy & Small Breeds (Chihuahua, Pomeranian, Shih Tzu): High metabolism, prone to hypoglycemia — feed 4 small meals a day until 4 months old, then 3 meals until 6 months.
  • Medium Breeds (Beagle, Cocker Spaniel): 3 meals a day until 6 months, then transition to 2 meals.
  • Large & Giant Breeds (Golden Retriever, German Shepherd, Labrador): Use a large-breed-specific puppy formula with controlled calcium and phosphorus to prevent rapid bone growth and joint problems. Feed 3 meals a day until 4-5 months, then 2 meals through adulthood.

Reading UAE Pet Store Labels

Many supermarkets and pet shops stock both premium imported brands and budget local options. When comparing bags, prioritize:

  • A named animal protein as the first ingredient (e.g., "chicken," not "meat meal")
  • Life-stage labeling that matches your puppy's current age and breed size
  • DHA content for brain and eye development in puppies under 6 months
  • No artificial colors — unnecessary and more likely to trigger sensitivities in the UAE's dry climate

Hydration and Heat-Related Feeding Adjustments

Puppies lose moisture faster in UAE heat, even indoors with AC running for long hours. If your puppy is on dry kibble only, consider adding a small amount of warm water or unsalted bone broth to meals to boost hydration and palatability — especially useful if your pup seems to be eating less during peak summer months. Always leave fresh water out in multiple bowls, and refresh it more often than you would in a cooler country, as water left out can warm up quickly and become unappealing.

Transitioning Diets Safely

If you've imported a puppy or adopted one that arrived from a different supplier, it may have been eating a food brand that's hard to find locally. Switching foods abruptly is one of the most common causes of puppy diarrhea in new UAE households. Use the 7-day rule:

  • Days 1-2: 75% old food, 25% new food
  • Days 3-4: 50/50 mix
  • Days 5-6: 25% old
