Puppy-Proofing Your Home in the UAE: A Room-by-Room Checklist

Puppy-Proofing Your Home in the UAE: A Room-by-Room Checklist

Bringing home a new puppy is one of the most exciting moments for any UAE pet owner, but your villa or apartment can hide more hazards than you think. Between marble floors, balcony railings, and the everyday clutter of modern Emirati homes, a curious puppy can get into trouble within minutes of unsupervised exploration. At Puppyfy UAE, we want every new puppy parent to feel confident their home is as safe as it is welcoming. Here is a practical, room-by-room guide to puppy-proofing your space before your new companion arrives.

Living Room and Majlis Areas

Majlis seating areas and living rooms often have low tables, trailing abaya or curtain cords, and decorative items within easy reach of a jumping puppy.

  • Tuck away phone chargers, curtain cords, and electrical wires behind furniture or use cord protectors.
  • Remove small decorative items, coasters, and incense burners (bakhoor) from low tables—hot coals and ash are a serious burn risk.
  • Secure loose rugs on marble or tiled floors, as puppies can slip and injure joints, especially larger breeds like Golden Retrievers during growth spurts.

Kitchen Safety

UAE kitchens often feature tempting smells, tiled floors, and chemical cleaning supplies stored at ground level.

  • Store cleaning products, dishwasher tablets, and dates or chocolate (toxic to dogs) in high cabinets with childproof latches.
  • Keep bins covered or tucked inside a cabinet—puppies are notorious counter-surfers and bin-raiders.
  • Watch for onions, garlic, and grapes left on counters, as these are common in Emirati and South Asian cooking but toxic to puppies.

Balconies and Outdoor Spaces

This is one of the most overlooked danger zones in UAE apartments and villas, especially given how many homes have open balconies or pool access.

  • Never leave a puppy unsupervised on a balcony, even briefly—small breeds can slip through railings, and heat exposure can cause heatstroke within minutes.
  • If you have a private pool or garden, install temporary mesh fencing until your puppy is confidently swimming and trained around water.
  • Check garden plants against the ASPCA toxic plant list; common UAE landscaping plants like oleander and sago palm are highly poisonous to dogs.

Bedrooms and Laundry Areas

Bedrooms often contain small items puppies love to chew, while laundry rooms hide chemical hazards.

  • Keep abayas, shoes, and jewellery off the floor—fabric and leather are common choking and digestion hazards for teething puppies.
  • Store laundry detergent pods and fabric softener well out of reach; these are highly toxic if chewed.
  • Close wardrobe doors and dryer doors fully, as puppies love dark, enclosed spaces and can get trapped.

Managing Heat and Flooring Hazards

UAE homes are built for the climate, but that means surfaces and systems that aren't always puppy-friendly.

  • Marble and polished tile floors can be slippery for puppies still developing coordination—consider rubber-backed mats in play areas.
  • Keep puppies away from direct AC vents and avoid placing their
